JACKSON’S JOINS DRIVE TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT RAD
10th June 2004
PEOPLE are being advised to take precautions against the harmful effects of a radioactive gas after reports of higher than usual levels in some parts of the country.
Research by the National Radiological Protection Board identified Lincolnshire as one of the areas with slightly higher radon levels and now Lincoln-based Jackson Building Centres hopes to help raise awareness about the measures available to tackle the problem.
Radon is an invisible, odourless gas produced during the decay of uranium, which is found in materials such as soil, rocks and bricks. Although it disperses harmlessly outside, it can enter buildings through floors, walls and openings such as pipes and drains. Prolonged exposure to the substance is linked to health problems including an increased risk of lung cancer.
According to Jackson’s marketing manager Colin Bartleet there are several steps that can be taken to reduce radon levels in both new and existing buildings and the company stocks a range of suitable products.
One of the most effective measures is a specially designed underfloor sump system which can be fitted in existing buildings. It works by extracting gases from the soil thereby preventing radon from entering a building.
Protection barriers such as gas proof membranes, which can be fitted during the construction of new buildings, and radon tape are also available from Jackson’s.
Trained staff are on hand at the company’s 19 branches and will be able to offer advice about installation and maintenance to ensure that customers receive the most effective solution.
Colin said: “The issue of radon levels in Lincoln and the surrounding area is a matter of concern but there are products on the market to stop it becoming a problem. People can call into any Jackson branch for information and advice to find out what options are available."
