THE Lincoln-based builders’ merchant Jackson’s has once again thrown its support behind the town’s 10K Road Race which takes place on April 3.
Not only is the company sponsoring eight trophies in this year’s event, but more than 20 Jackson’s staff will be pounding the tarmac to support the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
Jackson’s Marketing Manager Colin Bartleet, who will be taking part himself, said: “As a result of last year’s event we not only managed to raise a substantial amount for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance – but also benefited from some very good exercise. We are looking to do the same this year, and even beat our 2004 race times.”
In this, the event’s ninth year, Jackson’s has chosen to sponsor the awards for the first young man and woman to cross the finish line. As well as the trophies for the male and female U17s, Jackson’s will also sponsor the trophies in the male 40-49, 50-59 and 60+ categories, and the female 35-39, 40-49 and 50+ groups.
In 2004 the Run attracted a field of more than 2,500 and this year’s event is set to be even bigger and better after organisers City of Lincoln Council increased the limit on entrants up to a possible 4,000.
Microchip equipment is to be introduced at Lincoln for the first time, which will allow runners to measure their exact time, even if they cross the starting line at the back of a large group. The Championchip system, which has been used in the Great North Run and the London Marathon, works by a signal transmitted from mats at the start and finish line to microchips which are attached to each runner’s ankle by a Velcro strap.
The information recorded will give an accurate race time which was not previously possible for those who spent their first precious seconds approaching the starting point.
The designated charity to benefit from this year’s Run are the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and the Lincolnshire branch of the British Heart Foundation, although participants can compete in support of other causes.
The event gets underway at 9.45am with the Primary School Challenge which starts on the Newport Road near the roundabout and Bishop Grossteste College.
Wheelchair users will speed away from the main starting point on Riseholme Road near Yarborough School at 10.25am, followed five minutes later by entrants in the main race.
