WITH summer almost over and autumn just around the corner, people’s thoughts often turn to doing jobs around the home when the weather changes. But if you’re thinking about carrying out a DIY project, big or small, then don’t wait too long as now is one of the best times to make a start.

Manufacturers and DIY outlets are well aware that autumn and winter are key times for tackling all those jobs you’ve been meaning to do and they sometimes respond with money-saving promotions. If you shop around, it’s possible to cut your costs considerably so it’s well worth making the effort to find out what’s on offer.

A visit to your local builders’ merchant is a good place to start as they supply a host of products and services all under one roof for a variety of projects around the home. You might be planning to install a new bathroom or kitchen or even build a property from scratch. Whatever you have in mind, there are some great deals to be found at this time of year.

Lincoln-based Jackson Building Centres, which has outlets throughout the East Midlands and South Yorkshire, holds regular promotions and advises customers to do their homework and plan ahead. Colin Bartleet, Jackson’s marketing manager, explained: “Many projects are obviously seasonal with people concentrating on jobs outside in the good weather. It’s when the sunshine disappears and the evenings get shorter that people turn their attention to indoor projects. But instead of waiting until winter actually arrives, it pays to start early by buying the items you’ll need as soon as possible and taking advantage of the money-saving offers be found in the autumn.”

According to Jackson’s, products most in demand at this time of year include wall and floor tiles, bathroom suites and accessories, kitchens and appliances and, not surprisingly, fireplaces.

In response to this demand, Jackson’s is discounting the price of several of its most popular products starting later this month. Savings are available on items such as Onda and Java tiles, Symphony, Utopia and Sottini bathroom products and Candy and Neff electrical appliances.

“Anyone thinking of carrying out a self-build project could cut their costs considerably if they buy the majority of their products from a particular company during a promotion. Smaller jobs will obviously cost far less too and means that customers can afford to upgrade their choice of product or simply pocket the money they’ve saved,” added Colin.

And there’s no need to be daunted by the scale of a project either as there is plenty of help and information available for customers. Builders’ merchants such as Jackson’s can sometimes provide leaflets containing useful tips about particular tasks such as converting a loft or fitting a shower and experienced staff are always on hand to give advice and guidance. So, with some careful planning and expert help, there’s no reason why your next building project shouldn’t be both successful and cost-effective.

Jackson’s autumn promotion runs from September 14 to October 29 at each of its 20 branches.
