PREPARE YOUR FLOORS FOR WINTER

5th October 2005

WHEN it comes to brightening up your home, adding a smart new floor covering is one of the best places to start and there are numerous options available on the market.

Ceramic tiles and wooden laminate flooring are among the most popular choices of today’s home owners as people move away from traditional fitted carpets in every room. The different qualities and appearance of each material mean you can choose the appropriate covering for individual rooms depending on their use.

And, while you’re concentrating on sprucing up a floor’s appearance, why not consider the added benefit of underfloor heating to make it extra cosy for the winter months as well?

If you need some advice about the products available and the practicalities of fitting a new floor or heating system, then your local Jackson’s Building Centre is well worth a visit. They often stock a range of floor coverings and heating supplies as well as the necessary equipment to carry out the job.

Lincoln based Jackson Building Centres have floor tiles on display in individual room settings in many of its showrooms so customers can see for themselves exactly how the end result will look. They also stock hardwood flooring in a choice of shades as well as plumbing and heating supplies from leading manufacturers.

Tiles have grown in popularity over recent years thanks to their hardwearing and durable qualities. They now come in a wide choice of colours and finishes, ideal for complementing your existing décor. Kitchens and bathrooms are the favoured rooms for floor tiles as both areas are prone to moisture and spillages and tiles will simply wipe clean without leaving unsightly stains.

Laminate flooring, on the other hand, looks particularly elegant in hallways, lounges and dining rooms and the natural appearance of a wooden floor is likely to blend in well with existing items of furniture.

Once you’ve made your choice of tiles or wood now is the time to think about the issue of heating and, with winter not far away, it’s worth considering the alternatives. Underfloor heating is becoming recognised as an effective and efficient alternative to conventional radiators. According to an independent study commissioned by Polypipe, whose products Jackson’s stocks, customers can expect up to a 20 per cent saving in labour time and costs when installing Polypipe underfloor heating compared to fitting a coventional radiator system.

Other benefits include the fact that it is lead free and doesn’t corrode or build up scale and there’s no fear of a burst water pipe during frosty weather. It also has the added comfort factor of being cosy to walk on during a cold winter’s day.

So if you want to give your home a facelift and make it warmer this winter, pop into your local Jackson’s Building Centre to see what’s on offer and you could soon have a floor that not only looks stylish but is extra cosy too.
