YOUNGSTERS at a Nottinghamshire nursery school are to benefit from a massive £900 donation thanks to the support of local businesses.

The Sutton in Ashfield branch of Jackson Building Centres handed over a cheque to the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind after hosting a special charity event to raise funds for the Early Start Day Nursery.

Colleagues and customers of the builders’ merchants raised a grand total of £938 for the Early Start Day Nursery, which is attended by visually impaired children and babies from across the county.

More than 100 customers came along to the event at the Hosiery Mills Sports Ground in Sutton in Ashfield. Guests placed bets on eight pre-recorded races and a large portion of the winnings was donated to the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind.

Lyndon Johnson, branch manager at Jackson’s centre at Sutton, said he was delighted to help the worthwhile local cause. “We were happy to support the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind. The charity race night entertained more than 100 customers, who gave generously throughout the night’s proceedings.”
The nursery in Nottingham is a free service to all visually impaired children in the county but costs the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind more than £40,000 a year to provide places.

Jackson’s suppliers Ibstock Brick, Baxi Potterton, Castle Cement, Forticrete Blocks, Birtley Building Products, Lafarge Plasterboard, Mira and Polypipe helped to boost the overall total by sponsoring the eight races.

The Sutton branch is no stranger to raising funds for charity. The team, which supports a chosen charity each year, has raised thousands of pounds for worthwhile causes. This summer they donated £2,600 for Nottingham City Hospital’s Kinder Appeal, which raises money for research into kidney disease as well as providing support for young patients and their families.

The branch was inspired to back the appeal after Helen Barratt, who works in the kitchen section, approached Lyndon Johnson for support. Helen was keen to drum up interest in the cause after her daughter Laura, 15, underwent a life-saving kidney transplant at the hospital last year.
