JACKSON MANAGEMENT TRAINEES IN GARDEN PROJECT

30th October 2007

A group of management trainees from Jackson Building Centres in Lincoln have transformed an outdoor space into a garden to be proud of at a local residential property, as part of Business in the Community (BITC) project.

The Builders’ merchant, which operates 26 branches throughout the East Midlands and Yorkshire has been an active member of Business in The Community for several years and has been involved in number of community projects.

Each year, Business in the Community receives requests from community organisations to carry out work with them on a voluntary basis and acts as a matching service between member businesses and community organisations. This year, as part of a ‘Team Challenge’ exercise the management trainees at Jackson were given the task of completing a garden renovation project on behalf of Crime Reduction Charity, NACRO.

A site visit was arranged for the trainees to meet the residents of the property to determine what the garden would look like after completion. The project took place over a number of weeks and was supported by Jackson’s supplier, Bradstone, who donated materials towards project.

Steve Cranston - human resources manager at Jackson Building Centres said: “Projects like this are fabulous way of making a difference in the community, and it is also an excellent way for our management trainees to learn new and practical skills, including time management, project management, communication and team working skills, all of which help with their development as future managers.”

Tracey Evans, project worker at NACRO said; “The end result is absolutely fabulous. We are extremely grateful to all the management trainees at Jackson who put hours of hard work into the project, working closely with the residents to create a really great outdoor space for everyone to enjoy. It really has made such a difference.”

NACRO is a crime reduction charity, which makes society safer by finding practical solutions to reducing crime. Since 1996 the charity has worked to give ex-offenders, disadvantaged people and deprived communities the help they need to build a future. The charity has a number of properties in Lincoln and in towns and cities throughout the UK.
