‘JACK ’ THE BUILDER
10th September 2008
Pupils from Hillocks Primary and Nursery school on Unwin Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield will start back to school as celebrities, thanks to starring in a CD they produced whilst visiting their local Jackson Building Centres recently to learn some tricks of the trade.
Jackson Building Centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield have helped children learn what ‘Bob the Builder’ does for a living during the ‘outside play and learning’ part of their curriculum.
Head Teacher of Hillocks School, Sue Regan said, “I am very grateful to everyone at Jacksons for all the time and effort they gave to the children. The impact on their play and learning has been huge. Jackson employees were absolutely first class. Our children were spellbound by their explanations. It has had a positive impact and created many excellent educational opportunities”.
She continued, “The visits to the yard were fantastic, it brought to life what happens in there, helped to improve the children’s writing skills and developed many other skills, such as safety and creativity. Without the visits and the employees at Jackson talking to them and explaining things, the children would not have got as much out of the visit”.
Jackson Building Centres is an integral part of the local community and now aims to continue it’s involvement with the school by donating materials for art and craft lessons and helping where possible with new projects.
Roger Francis, Operations Director at Jackson Building Centres attended the school recently to be officially presented with the CD compilation by the Chair of Governors as a thank you for their support.
Roger explains, “I thought the CD was absolutely brilliant - they must have put in a lot of time to do it, showing both the children and the staff’s enthusiasm.
“I feel it was very beneficial for the children to be shown around the branch and I think it’s important that we are able to give something back and support the local community.”
Warehouse Manager, David Cliff, arranged the visits to the branch for the children to give them inspiration for setting up their own mock builders’ yard, and made a number of visits to the school to support the children in their play. David also enlisted the help of other local businesses and Jackson suppliers to source a wide range of free materials, which the children put to good use.
David said, “The whole process went really well and as a result the project continued for an entire half term. The staff explained what they wanted to do and we helped where we could, even by building a giant Jenga with building terms written on the blocks!
